21 Birthday Gifts For The Best Friend Who Tells You Everything

She has narrated every job, every date and every haircut to you, which means you already know what she wants better than any gift guide does. Twenty-one objects for the friend you chose, half of them an excuse to see her.

The best friend aisle sells one thing, in about four hundred variations, and that thing is proof. A pendant cut in half so you can each wear a jagged edge. A mug reading Best Friends Since 2011. A framed map of the sky above the car park where you met. A candle whose label explains, at some length, what a best friend is. The category has decided that the job of the gift is to establish the fact of the friendship, and it will keep establishing it until you leave the shop.

Which is strange, because she is the single person in your life who has never once needed convincing. There has been no ambiguity for years. Whatever is difficult about buying for her, it is not that she is unsure how you feel, and every object that sets out to reassure her on that point is answering a question nobody asked. Meanwhile two things are true of a best friend that are not true of a sister or a partner: you chose her, deliberately, and you keep choosing her, and the whole arrangement is held together by plans that somebody has to actually make.

So the twenty-one below do one of two jobs. Some of them answer something she has said out loud, because best friends narrate and you have been half-listening for a decade, which means you are holding better information than any list could give you. The rest are frankly an invitation: a puzzle that takes four evenings, a book of fifty plans you are not allowed to renegotiate, a robe you hang on the back of your own door. Prices run from nine dollars to a hundred and four. Nothing here has her relationship to you printed on the side.

With affection, the editors.

The Fifty Sealed Plans.

The Adventure Challenge, Friends Edition, scratch-off.

50 ChallengesScratch-Off PagesPhoto Spaces Inside

The premise is that you cannot see what you have agreed to until you have already agreed to it. Each page is silvered over. You scratch, you read, and the rule printed on the front is that there are no take-backs. What that removes is the part of adult friendship that actually does the damage, which is never affection but the negotiation: the four-message thread about a Thursday, the rain check, the eventual quiet. Some of the fifty take an evening and some take an hour, each with a budget and a time printed beside it, and a blank space for the photograph afterwards. It is the only thing on this page that arrives with an obligation attached, which is precisely why it works.

A pale organic cotton waffle-weave robe with a tie belt, folded. PRODUCT // THE ROBE YOU KEEP FOR HER
The Spare Peg

The Robe You Keep For Her.

Coyuchi, organic Turkish cotton, waffle weave.

100% Organic CottonGOTS CertifiedWaffle Weave

You can give her this for her own bathroom and it will be the best thing she owns. Or you can do the more interesting version, which is to hang it on the back of your own door and tell her it is hers, so that the question of whether she stays late enough to stay over becomes a shrug instead of a plan. Coyuchi have been making organic cotton in Point Reyes since 1991, and the waffle is the piece they are known for: light enough to pack, still absorbent after the thirtieth wash in a way terry never is, and certified organic across the whole supply chain rather than at the final step. The most expensive thing here, and the only one where the gift is really an offer.

The Table

The Board That Rotates.

Beyond Innoventions, wooden, thirty by twenty-two inches.

Fits 1000 Pieces30 by 22 InchesFour Sorting Drawers

Every friendship that has lasted has a table it happens at. This is a better one: a wooden surface that spins on a bearing so neither of you has to lean across, four drawers underneath for sorting edges from sky, and a felt top that stops a finished corner sliding into itself when somebody stands up. The real argument for it is domestic rather than technical. A puzzle left out on a dining table has to be cleared for dinner and is therefore never finished. A puzzle on a board that lifts and slides under a sofa survives four separate evenings, which is roughly how long a thousand pieces takes two people who are mostly talking.

A thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle box showing an illustrated map of American national parks. PRODUCT // THE NATIONAL PARKS
The Thousand Pieces

The National Parks.

MasterPieces, one thousand pieces, an illustrated map.

1000 PiecesIllustrated Park MapMade In The USA

The thing to put on the board, chosen because it is secretly a list. It is an illustrated map of the American national parks, which means the four evenings you spend on it are four evenings of somebody saying they have never been to Zion and somebody else saying neither have I. MasterPieces have been cutting puzzles in Arizona since 1995 and the pieces are properly random-cut rather than the grid that cheaper thousand-piece boxes use, so the pieces actually lock and a completed section can be lifted. Buy it with the board above and you have given one gift in two parts, which is a more generous shape than one gift at twice the price.

A pair of silicone-wrapped Bala Bangles wrist weights in a soft muted colour. PRODUCT // THE WEIGHTS THAT DO NOT LOOK IT
The Wrists

The Weights That Do Not Look It.

Bala, two pounds the pair, silicone over steel.

2 lb PairSilicone-Wrapped SteelWrist Or Ankle

She has announced that she is starting pilates. She has announced it more than once, which is the tell: the intention is real and the equipment is the friction. Bala solved a problem nobody had framed properly, which is that wrist weights had always looked like physiotherapy, in grey neoprene with a velcro rasp. These are steel wrapped in soft silicone, they come in colours chosen by somebody with an eye, and they sit on a shelf rather than in a cupboard, which is the entire reason they get used. Two pounds is the pair worth buying. One pound is not enough to change anything and three is enough to stop her wearing them.

The Revlon One-Step Volumizer, an oval hot-air brush with a black and pink handle. PRODUCT // THE ONE-STEP VOLUMIZER
The Blow-Dry

The One-Step Volumizer.

Revlon, an oval brush and a dryer in one hand.

Three Heat SettingsOval Brush HeadCeramic Titanium Barrel

One of the highest-selling beauty tools Amazon has ever listed, and she still has not bought it, because it costs forty dollars and she has a hairdryer and a brush and cannot quite justify owning the thing that is both. That gap is the whole opportunity. The oval head means the underside of the hair gets the same tension as the top, which is the part that is genuinely difficult with two hands and two objects, and it takes roughly half the time of doing it properly the old way. It is not a Dyson and does not pretend to be. It is the tool that gets a person from washed to leaving the house on a Tuesday.

A pair of chunky gold-plated hoop earrings on a plain background. PRODUCT // THE EVERYDAY HOOPS
The Ears

The Everyday Hoops.

PAVOI, 14K gold plated, the chunky profile.

14K Gold PlatedHypoallergenic PostsSeveral Diameters

There is a specific pair of earrings a woman wears for four years without taking out, and it is almost never the expensive pair. It is the hoop that is thick enough to read as deliberate, light enough to sleep in, and cheap enough that losing one in a taxi is annoying rather than ruinous. PAVOI have built a genuinely large business on exactly that calculation, plating properly over a hypoallergenic base rather than over brass that goes green in a fortnight. Pick the diameter by looking at what she already wears, which you can do from any photograph on her phone, and which is the sort of thing only you would bother to check.

A folded pair of soft cashmere bed socks in a neutral colour. PRODUCT // THE BED SOCKS
The Feet

The Bed Socks.

iMongol, one hundred per cent cashmere, seamless toe.

100% CashmereSeamless ToeFor Sleeping In

Almost everything sold as a cashmere sock is a wool blend with enough cashmere in it to put the word on the label, which is why most of them cost eighteen dollars and pill within a month. These are the whole fibre, knitted loose and long with a flat toe seam so nothing sits across the joint, and they are meant for the twenty minutes before sleep rather than for shoes. Nobody buys themselves a forty-dollar sock. That is not a failure of the sock, it is a fixed feature of how people spend money on themselves, and it is the reason this category is such reliable ground for a gift.

A small round Le Creuset stoneware cocotte in cerise red with its lid on. PRODUCT // THE EIGHT-OUNCE COCOTTE
The Small Pot

The Eight-Ounce Cocotte.

Le Creuset, glazed stoneware in cerise, oven to table.

8 oz CapacityGlazed StonewareDishwasher Safe

The cheapest way through a door she has been standing outside of. A Dutch oven is a hundred and eighty dollars and a decision; this is twenty-two and a present, and it is the same glaze from the same foundry, fired the same way. In practice it holds a single baked egg, a ramekin of chocolate pot, garlic going soft in oil, or the salt beside the hob. What it really does is put the object in her kitchen, in that particular red, where it is seen forty times a day. Nobody has ever owned one piece of Le Creuset for very long, which is a sentence that should be read as both a warning and a recommendation.

The Shelf

The Nine Succulents.

LEGO Botanicals, 771 pieces, arranged as nine plants.

771 PiecesNine Separate PlantsBuilds As Nine Sets

The clever structural fact about this set is that it is nine small builds rather than one large one, so it can be done across nine separate sittings, or split between two people at a table with a drink each, which is the version being recommended here. What comes out at the end is not a model of a thing, it is the thing: nine plastic succulents in nine pots that go on a shelf and stay there, requiring the light and water that her real plants have been quietly refused. For the friend who has killed three actual succulents and taken it personally, it is also, gently, a joke.

The Carafe And Its Lid.

LCORMAG, thirty ounces, the tumbler sits on top.

30 oz CapacityTumbler Doubles As LidDishwasher Safe

A glass jug with a matching tumbler that inverts over the neck and becomes the lid, so the water beside the bed is covered without a plastic bottle being involved. It is a hotel object, and that is the point of it: the specific small luxury of not having to go to the kitchen at two in the morning, in a form that costs twenty dollars rather than a night in a hotel. It photographs beautifully, which matters more than it should, and it is the sort of thing a person looks at in a shop, thinks is lovely, and puts down again because they came in for a colander.

A YETI stainless steel wine tumbler with a clear magnetic slider lid. PRODUCT // THE WINE TUMBLER
The Glass Without A Stem

The Wine Tumbler.

YETI, ten ounces, vacuum insulated steel.

10 oz CapacityDouble-Wall VacuumMagnet Slider Lid

Stemware exists to keep a hand off the bowl, and it works, and it is also entirely unsuited to a balcony, a beach, a bath or a garden in September. This is the honest solution rather than the apologetic one: double-walled steel that holds the temperature for hours, a magnetic slider lid so it does not fill with rain or attract a wasp, and a base wide enough that it does not go over on grass. YETI make these for people who are outdoors on purpose, which means the engineering is real. What it is actually for is the two of you sitting outside long after it got cold.

A copper-finish cocktail shaker set with strainer, jigger and bar spoon. PRODUCT // THE COPPER SHAKER SET
The Bar

The Copper Shaker Set.

Mixology & Craft, weighted Boston tins, copper finish.

Weighted Boston ShakerHawthorne StrainerJigger And Spoon

The weighted Boston is what bars actually use, two tins that seal against each other with a knock and open with a knock, rather than the three-piece cobbler shaker sold to homes, which seizes shut the moment it gets cold and has to be run under a hot tap while everybody watches. This set has the tins, a Hawthorne strainer, a double jigger and a long spoon, in copper that will darken unevenly over a few years and look considerably better for it. The friend to give it to is the one who orders the same cocktail everywhere and has clearly been thinking about how it is made.

A jar of dehydrated lime wheels for cocktail garnish. PRODUCT // THE DEHYDRATED LIMES
The Garnish

The Dehydrated Limes.

Cocktail Garnish Co., three ounces, fifty-five slices.

55+ Slices3 oz JarSmall Batch Dried

Nobody has ever bought themselves garnish. It is the definitional impulse purchase that never gets impulsively purchased, because a lime costs forty cents and the argument ends there. What the dried wheel does is different from what the fresh one does: it sits flat on the surface, it does not go brown by the second drink, and it makes an ordinary gin and tonic look like it was made on purpose. A Shop TODAY editor gives these as a host gift and describes the recipient lighting up, which is the correct response to receiving something you would never have bought and immediately want to use.

The chocolate box is the least imaginative gift in the world right up until it is a good one, at which point it becomes among the best, because it is the only present on this page that is designed to be opened in company and shared out in the first ten minutes. Chuao is a small Californian chocolatier with a chef behind it and a habit of putting things in chocolate that sound wrong and are not: potato crisps, chilli and mango, popcorn with sea salt. Between the two of you there are several thousand photographs and not one of them exists as an object. That is a genuinely new condition, roughly fifteen years old, and it is the reason a printed picture now lands harder than it did when everybody had a shoebox of them. This connects to her phone and returns a credit-card-sized print in twelve seconds, from the whole archive rather than from whatever happens to be in front of the lens. Give it with a print already made and stuck to her fridge, which takes four minutes, costs nothing, and is the part she will actually remember.

The Book

The Book About The Work.

Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman, Simon & Schuster.

PaperbackTwo Authors, One FriendshipUnder Ten Dollars

Two women who host a podcast together wrote a book about the fact that their friendship nearly ended, and then about what they did instead, which included going to therapy together and finding out that almost nobody has language for this. That is the useful part. We have a vocabulary for romantic difficulty and an entire industry around repairing it, and for the friendship that has gone quiet we have nothing at all except the assumption that nobody is at fault and it cannot be discussed. Nine dollars, and the only gift here that argues something. Give it to the friend who reads, and only if the two of you are fine.

The Gilded One Line a Day five-year memory book, a hardcover journal with gilt edges. PRODUCT // THE FIVE-YEAR DIARY
The Journal

The Five-Year Diary.

Chronicle Books, the gilded edition, one line a day.

Five Years Per PageGilded EdgesHardcover

Each page is a single date with five short ruled entries on it, one for each year, so that by the third August she is reading what she wrote on this day in the two years before. That structure is the whole invention. A blank journal asks for a mood and a spare half hour and therefore fails by February; a single ruled line asks for eleven words and can be done in bed. What it gradually produces is not a diary but a record of what changed, which is the thing nobody thinks to keep and everybody wishes they had. A Shop TODAY editor gives it for twenty-fifth birthdays specifically.

The Travel Jewellery Case.

NGVRC, genuine leather, with a mirror inside the lid.

Genuine LeatherBuilt-In MirrorRing Roll And Hooks

The problem it solves is small and happens every single time: three necklaces travel in a wash bag and arrive as one object, and the first twenty minutes of a weekend away are spent at a window picking at a knot with a hotel pen. This is proper leather rather than the coated card most of the category is made from, with hooks along one side so chains hang rather than coil, a padded roll for rings, and a mirror set into the lid, which turns it into the thing she gets ready at when the bathroom is occupied. A quietly excellent gift for the friend who is always going somewhere.

The Foot Roller.

TheraFlow, solid hardwood, ridged along the arch.

Solid HardwoodTextured RidgesFits Under A Desk

Deeply unromantic, and one of the two or three most reliably loved objects on this page. It is a ridged block of hardwood that lives under a desk or beside a sofa and gets used absent-mindedly during a phone call, which is exactly why it works: nothing has to be scheduled, nothing has to be lit, no evening has to be set aside. For anyone who stands for a living, runs, or wears the shoes that look correct and hurt, it is the cheapest genuine relief available. Give it alongside something prettier if you are worried about how it reads, though in practice it will be the one she mentions.

A rose quartz face roller and gua sha stone in a presentation box. PRODUCT // THE ROLLER AND THE STONE
The Face

The Roller And The Stone.

BAIMEI, natural rose quartz, the pair boxed together.

Natural Rose QuartzRoller And Gua ShaUnder Ten Dollars

Under ten dollars, and included with clear eyes about what it is. The claims made for facial rollers are mostly unprovable, but the two effects that are not are the ones that matter here: cold stone on a face at seven in the morning does visibly reduce puffiness, and drawing something slowly along a jaw for ninety seconds is a small enforced pause in a day with none in it. It comes boxed, it costs less than a card and a coffee, and it is the correct thing to put in the parcel beside the real present so there is a second layer of paper to get through.

Briefly, in answer

A few honest questions, answered.

What should you get your best friend for her birthday? +

Something she has said out loud, which is a resource you have and nobody else does. Best friends narrate: the class she keeps meaning to book, the thing she nearly bought and put down, the object in your flat she picks up every time she visits. None of that is a secret, it is simply unrecorded, and the reason it goes unused is that the sentences arrive months before the birthday and get lost. Start a note on your phone with her name on it and add one line whenever she says something. Next year the problem solves itself, and roughly half of this page is built on that principle.

How much should you spend on a best friend birthday gift? +

Twenty-five to fifty dollars is the comfortable range for adult friends and most of this list sits there on purpose. Go higher for a thirtieth, a fortieth, a bad year, a new flat, or a friend who did something enormous for you and would not let you thank her properly. The one rule worth keeping is symmetry. If the two of you have swapped thirty-dollar presents for a decade, a two-hundred-dollar one is not generosity, it changes the terms, and she will spend next August worrying about matching it.

Are matching best friend gifts a good idea? +

Rarely, and the reason is worth being precise about. A split pendant, a pair of bracelets, a mug with the year on it: each of these is proof of the friendship, and she is the one person alive who has never required proof. Sentiment is not the scarce thing between you and adding more of it does nothing. What a gift can carry that a feeling cannot is evidence of attention. If you want the shared object anyway, buy two of something genuinely good rather than two halves of something that only works as a set, and let it be a coincidence rather than a statement.

What is a good birthday gift for a best friend who lives far away? +

Something flat, unbreakable and cheap to post, because the shipping on a puzzle board will exceed the puzzle board. The book, the five-year diary, the hoops, the gua sha set, the cashmere socks and the dehydrated limes all go in a padded envelope for very little. If distance is the actual problem rather than a logistical detail, the photo printer is the pick: give it with two prints already made, keep the same two on your own fridge, and the object stops being a gadget and starts being a standing arrangement.

What should you avoid buying your best friend? +

Anything with an opinion about her. Diet products, fitness gear she did not ask for, a book about a habit you have decided she should break, skincare aimed at something she has never mentioned. Close friends have unusual licence to be direct, which is exactly why a present is the wrong instrument for it: it arrives in front of other people, it cannot be taken back, and it gets remembered for a decade. The wrist weights on this page are here only because she raised pilates first, and that distinction is the whole of the rule.

A Closing Note

What actually
runs out.

Friendships very rarely end in a conversation. They end in a gap that neither person notices until it has become the shape of the thing, because the affection stayed exactly where it was and only the occasions stopped. Nobody was at fault, and that is precisely the difficulty: there is no argument to resolve, no apology available, just two people who each assumed the other would suggest something. This is why so much of the best friend aisle feels beside the point. It keeps selling reassurance about the one resource that was never scarce, and stays silent on the one that is. A gift cannot fix that on its own. What it can do is arrive with a date attached, or with something in it that only works if two people are in the room, and make the next time slightly harder to keep postponing. Choose one of those and the object does the asking for you, which is a kinder trick than it sounds, because asking is the part that neither of you has ever been good at.
